Unless you're working on traditional Mac OS, I'd recommend that you look at Shark. It can do a lot of cool stuff by itself, without modifying your code; and it has an API that lets you add custom instrumentation points. Curiously, the headers aren't installed when you install the CHUD framework as part of Xcode. You'll have to download CHUD directly.
