Admin Notice: Updated rules for lists.apple.com mailing lists and other site updates
This message is being sent to all subscribers of discussion lists hosted on lists.apple.com. We apologize in advance if you get multiple copies of this. Item in this message: o Updated rules for use of the mailing lists on lists.apple.com o Notice of upcoming changes to the archives and search engine o new FAQ item: how to link to www.lists.apple.com o new FAQ item: technical details about lists.apple.com ::::::::::::::::: Updated rules for use of the mailing lists on lists.apple.com ::::::::::::::::: We want to inform you that we have revised the rules that we ask all subscribers to follow when they use our mailing lists. Please review the updated rules: http://www.lists.apple.com/rules.shtml so you're aware of what we consider acceptable use of these lists. For the most part, the changes are minor, unless you maintain an archive of messages of these lists that is not for personal use only. If you maintain any kind of archive of messages that is accessible to the public in any way, you need to look at the new restrictions and drop us an e-mail to discuss how to get permission to maintain that list. It would also be a good time to review our FAQ: http://www.lists.apple.com/cgi-bin/mwf/board_show.pl?id=4 since we've added a number of items recently to answer common questions we've been getting (and we keep getting questions that are already answered in the FAQ. Please check there before writing...) If you have comments on the rules, drop me a line. I'm always willing to listen and consider improvements. ::::::::::::::::: Notice of upcoming changes to the archives and search engine ::::::::::::::::: Over the last few months, we have gotten a lot of feedback on the archives and the search engine. We've been listening, and I'm happy to say that we've been working on a new archiving setup, and the first pieces of it are ready to go. Over the next few weeks, we will be making changes to the text archives, and converting all of the old data to the new format. During the conversion, there are going to be times when parts of the archive are going to be offline, or in an inconsistent state. There are also going to be times when the search engine is out of sync with the archives, and returning bad links. We are going to try to minimize these problems -- but it's a large set of data, and it's going to take time to do the conversion, and some conversion issues are going to occur. Please be patient while we make these changes -- I think we'll all like the new format much better once we get there, and we'll try to minimize the hassles during the trip. Once we get the new text archives converted and in place, we'll be rolling out an improved search engine. That will happen a few weeks after the archive conversion is finished, once we're sure it's fully functioning with the entire set of data. We will try to keep the existing search engine functioning through the conversion, but it may not be able to handle the new archives. If it can't, we'll do what we can to minimize the downtime or limitations. We'll put out more details on the search engine as we get ready to roll it out. ::::::::::::::::: o new FAQ item: how to link to www.lists.apple.com ::::::::::::::::: We've noticed a number of people posting links to www.lists.apple.com on their web sites (thank you!). Not all of the links have been done in ways that we can guarantee will not break as we upgrade the system. Because of this, we've created a FAQ item that defines what is and isn't safe, and how to link to our site in a way that won't break, no matter what we change. If you maintain links to our listings, you should take a look at this: http://www.lists.apple.com/cgi-bin/mwf/topic_show.pl?id=221 ::::::::::::::::: o new FAQ item: technical details about lists.apple.com ::::::::::::::::: Finally, we've gotten many requests for the details of what makes the lists.apple.com system run. To answer those, we've added a FAQ item with the technical details and some other information about this site. if you're interested in what makes all this tick, see: http://www.lists.apple.com/cgi-bin/mwf/topic_show.pl?id=220 We have other things in store for the upcoming months. We think the lists.apple.com system's a pretty good one -- but we don't plan on resting on our laurels. Stay tuned.
