How do I add it to the installer? myPackage.pkg/Contents/Resources/ Remember that it has to be in the right location (see above), have the correct name ("postflight" or one of the other accepted names), no extension (check in terminal), have the correct owner, group and permissions (root/admin/755), and have the "executable" bit set. Julian, This is a bug/feature of the tar utility and (apparently) the closely related pax utility. I think what happens is that it creates the directory with the correct time, then puts a whole bunch of files in there, thus changing the modification time to the install time. I wrote a program once that extracted tar archives and I made a point not to exhibit that particular bug. My solution was a bit convoluted though. I think you'll have to write a postinstall/postupgrade script that goes through the install folder and changes all the folders to have the correct mod time. Basically here's the idea: Before making my pkg, I set the mod time of all files and directories in the input folder to be the same. After installing the pkg, the mod time of all FILES is what I set it to. However, for directories, some have the mod time I set, while others have a mod time matching the time at which I installed. lsbom -p MUGsfT only shows times for files, not directories, suggesting that maybe mod time for directories are not stored? I can't figure out what determines whether a folder gets the intended mod time (mod time of the directory when building the pkg) or time of install. Originally I had, in a particular directory: help/ myapp.app/ extra1/ extra2/ help and extra1 were empty, and both had the intended mod time after installed. extra2 and the .app were not empty and both got the time of install. Appeared to be a pattern. But then I filled more input files for my build, so that help now contained some html and image files, and extra1 now contained a wdgt and some other files. After this change, help gets installed with time of install, but extra1 gets installed with the intended time. Now since both contain files, I have no idea what is determining which time gets applied to the directories. And yes, my ultimate goal is to have the directories all show the time I want - specifically so that Get Info on the app shows the intended mod time. p.s. As your app works now, your installer must assume that everyone that will use the app will have their home directory available to the installer at well-known paths. Depending on the environment, this may be a bad assumption, because some home directories may exist on network servers, some users may be added later either locally or on the network, and some home directories may even be encrypted disk images (FileVault). Such assumption is probably okay for an app strictly intended for internal use, but you wouldn't want it leaving your organization that way. Not even as freeware. If it is absolutely essential that your app works the way it currently does (or changing it would be way too painful), I would suggest the following: 1. Create a tool that, given a path to a home directory, will initialize a plist file in that homedir's Library/Preferences folder. Your tool could just be a script that invokes the OS X "defaults" tool one or more times (unless your plist includes encrypted data or structures too complex for defaults). If you're more ambitious, you can bundle it as an application that can also be invoked from the command line. 2. Include that initialization tool in the installer, dropping it into /usr/local/bin, /usr/share/bin, or some similar place if it is command-line only, or into /Applications if it is launchable. 3. In a postinstall script, invoke the tool on the installing user's home directory, or perhaps on every directory within /Users that already has a Library subdirectory (eliminates Shared as well as locked FileVaults). The changing of the value from `NoRestart' to `RequiredRestart' didn't work: I tried to do this modification of this `IFPkgFlagRestartAction' key value, nested in the Info.plist, within an - InstallationCheck script, - MetaPackage preinstall script and - Singlepacke preinstall script; basically thought the package declaration is read in somewhere after such scripts were invoked. Ok, the installer seems to handle the package declarations statically, no way to do it. Does there an alternative exists to do such things? - One with NoRestart adn the other with RequiredRestart. - InstallationCheck script in each script determines whether they should be enabled or not. - It might be possible to just have one real package. The other one would be made of links to the real package for the .bom, .pax[.gz] (and probably Version, Size, etc...). I tested it and it works on 10.4 (I haven't tested the sym link thing but there's no reason it would not work). 1 package installing nothing but checking for the need to restart or not. The real package is in the Resources and is modified by the postflight script of the main package. The main package installs the real package using installer from the postflight script.
