So I tried a different test. This time, I installed v1.0 of the application and left it where it is. I then tried installing v2.0. But when I study the results, I find that I still have v1.0. Either upgrading does not work well, or something else is amiss. The user guide for PackageMaker 3.0 is quite unclear about the topic of relocation. Then again, that is why I'm writing the article. Then I moved the application (v1.0) to a different directory on the same volume. Next, I built another package with v2.0 of the same application. The Installer tool did found the moved application, and offered to upgrade it instead. But when I clicked on the Install button, I find that the moved application remains at v1.0. I have the 'Allow Relocation' flag set on both packages. I also made sure that both have different package versions. I thought that relocation will allow me to upgrade an installed application from v1.0 to v2.0. But this does not seem to be the case here. Can anyone help clarify this? I've set my installer project to ask the user for a destination volume. Thus, I left the checkboxes 'system volume' and 'user home directory' unchecked. I also set the project to do a custom install only. But after I build and run the package, clicking on the Continue button causes Installer to go directly to the Custom Install panel. So, instead of getting the following sequence Welcome -> Select a Destination -> Custom Install I get Welcome -> Custom Install. I dare not click on the Install button as I do not know where the payload will end up. Any ideas what's causing this? The project's Install Properties is set for 10.5. Everything of ours seems to been installed correctly. This installer was created with PackageMaker running in 10.4 and I'm installing into a clean install of 10.5 with the 10.5.1 update. I think I found out why I am getting confused. The test project I have has a CVS directory. That directory still appears on the Contents listbox, even though I have the pattern /CVS$ in my file filter list. But when I built the installer package and viewed the Archive.bom file, I find the CVS directory excluded from the file. That same directory also does not appear when I use the package to install the test project in a different volume. I want to know how the 'File Filters..." button on the Contents panel of PackageMaker 3.0 is suppose to work. At first, it looks like a way to exclude certain files from being added to the list. But my attempts seem to show that this is not the case. Also, the user guide for the new PackageMaker has nothing to say about this button. Can anyone provide me with some idea how it's suppose to work? It's for a feature article that I am writing for MacTech. I, too, think that's what it's for, and I use it (including some filter values I added on my own steam), and it seems to be working just fine for me. I believe I added these two: The first is because my sources are kept in Subversion, which splatters directories named ".svn" all over for its accounting. I was getting some of these in my Package, but they disappeared when I added this filter. The second is because I use Emacs to edit text files, and it makes backups into files whose names end in ~. Again, I was getting some copied into the package, but that stopped when I added this filter. Both those changes were actually made under Tiger and an earlier PackageMaker, but I'm using the same .pmproj file (not even saving it to a .pmdoc) to build now, on Leopard, and it still seems to be working.
