It is the daemon crashing. I am trying to debug it in xcode 3.0 and it seems to be crashing with a EXE_BAD_ACCESS when the SIGTERM is sent by launchctl unload. I was starting to think that this might be something with the way the project is set up in 10.4 and possible do I need to do some changes in the xcode project to pull in the correct/new headers or something. The installer is pretty simple basically I have two background programs, agent/daemon, and the installer checks to see if either is currently installed and/or running shuts down if they are running and installs the new programs. The installer is causing the daemon to crash on the unload thus causing the rest of the installation to fail. I thought I was reading where Apple had down some changes/beefing up of the launchd program/procedure. Could this be affecting the 10.5 run? Do you have an example or some place I can go see/read a tutorial on this procedure? So you're writing software without debugging it, or are you simply not the developer yourself? Either way, basic GDB usage would be well beyond the scope of this particular mailing list. I'd suggest passing the crash logs along to whomever is responsible for this code's maintenance. What your daemon actually does, how its plist is configured, what permissions it runs with, what shows up in the logs when you try to run and kill it yourself without launchd's help, whether or not you've run it through the debugger on 10.5, etc. This email sent to site_archiver(a)lists.apple.com

Only Apple (and its apologists) seem to find that attitude acceptable. Being an Apple-only developer/consultant, perhaps you don't realize the "software industry" is far far larger than you think it is. As a cross-platform developer, I feel compelled to point out where I think one platform got something wrong that others got right - with the best interests of the customer in mind. I'd never dream of apologizing for the state of any of Apple's development tools--complaining about them more often than using them got me fired from Apple after all--but given the amount of time they presently dedicate to maintaining the current versions, stretching those resources even thinner to make everything backward compatible for a tiny handful of self-proclaimed gadflies who fancy themselves champions of consumer justice would only mean even more bugs for everybody else. Perhaps you can elaborate as to what amazing new feature 10.5's Installer has brought that you simply cannot live without in 10.4? So, how can I build a package from the command line that respects the actual version numbers of the frameworks & apps I have? Or, what I am doing wrong? Indeed, the version value is created when you add your component to the package project. I wouldn't bet a lot on the ability of it getting updated when you build your package through the command line tool as there doesn't seem to be any obvious argument or option to do this. Under my (admin) account on my development machine, my built installer won't install the application, despite reporting a successful install. The installer log contains lines like the following, suggesting that it is installing back to the development directory instead of the correct /Applications folder. I haven't made any changes to the default Destination (/ Applications) set by PackageMaker when I dragged the iSpend.app bundle into it. Is this expected behaviour, or am I doing something wrong?
