When I read your question the first time, my first thought was "security flaws?". dmg is a good solution if you want to provide a ReadMe along with your package. Otherwise zip is a good solution. The good thing with zip file is that since most packages do not have components with resource fork, you can create your zip archive easily with your Linux server. I don't think it would be that easy to create a dmg on Linux. Whenever someone downloads our installer, we need to (on the server) insert a unique identifier somewhere into the installer. Then, during the installation, we use this unique suffix when making requests to another web service. My application is packaged as a PKG (not a "flat-file" - I was considering just renaming the downloaded file server-side and checking it during install) and now I am wondering how to do this... How does one normally embed some kind of unique identifier into each installer? My server is running linux, so the solution would have to work there.... Just imagine, it could be like using Quartz Composer to hook up the elements of your installation together and have things work they way _you_ want them to. Or how about even just having a GUI template (like Interface Builder) into which you could drop your pieces and set up how you want it to to operate? In the first versions of Mac OS X (probably until 10.3), if you had a License file in Resources ( == International) and one in French.lproj, Installer.app would use the file in Resources for all the languages but French. It would use the one in French.lproj for French. Then this changed and so the idea is that you should not use an International localization. For the record, in Mac OS X 10.5, there is (unless this has been fixed stealthily) a bug related to localized Licenses. You should not used the abbreviated localization name (en.lproj instead of English.lproj) as this will cause dynamic localization troubles with the buttons. It sure would be nice if Apple could stabilize their installer stuff. It's bad enough that it changes every version, but it makes it especially difficult to find accurate documentation. Thanks Robert - I didn't in fact have the .lproj extension. I renamed the folders, and added each folder as an additional resource to the installer within Iceberg. Now when I run the installer, I get the language menu at the top of the license agreement, and French is selected by default as appropriate, but I'm still seeing the English license agreement.
