To see what's going wrong, you can try this: 1. Select the .app in the payload hierarchy 2. Ctrl + Click and choose Reveal in Finder This should allow you to check that the project is pointing to the right instance of your application. If it seems OK, then build and run your project. Then from Installer.app, choose File > Show Files… . This will help you check that the files have been correctly added to the package payload. When folders or apps (which are folders) are dragged into Packages, they can't be expanded. Not sure why, it would be great to have this capability. I saw this happen in the past, figured it was due to the *.app permissions. After I correctly set the owner:group on the app, I pulled it into Packages and I made sure I left this checkbox unchecked. This way Packages can properly set owner:group. http://donmontalvo.com/installerdev/packages-do-not-keep-owner-and-group.jpg You can also select the app in Packages and set owner:group, permissions, etc., and trickle downward. Tim, If the Lego software allows it, you may want to investigate this option. The option is, rather than creating your own installer, is to place the application inside a disk image (DMG), then use ³Packages² to package the DMG and a post-install script. The DMG would be placed in a hidden folder (like /private/tmp) and the post-install script would mount the DMG, then install the Lego application inside the DMG, then unmount the DMG {earlier versions of Adobe Flash Player could be done this way, hence the example below): # mount DMG /usr/bin/hdiutil mount -nobrowse /private/tmp/³Flash_Player.dmg" # run installer via Terminal command "/Volumes/Flash Player/Install Adobe Flash Player.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Flash Player Install Manager" -install # unmount DMG /usr/bin/hdiutil detach "/Volumes/Flash Player² The reason I suggest this method is you are essentially installing the software locally on each machine, so it should still be vendor-supported if something goes awry. You are just using the DMG as a deployment method. Doing anything in the user domain is tricky. If you do it from the installer itself, you're likely to do it only for the current user, not any others. If you use a system-level user agent (the recommended approach), then you agent has to be smart enough to both *not* blindly add the icon upon every login (the user may remove the icon, and you don't want to add it back), and at the same time, smart enough *to* add the icon the first time after a new install. So, here's what it boils down to: You can add the icon for the current user only, and the code is simple. Or, you can add it for all users (including network accounts, and accounts which may not yet exist), and the code would be complicated. Or, you can just not do it at all. That's what I typically do. To help you with your original question, emmett adds the icon to the *current* user's dock. If you run emmett as-is in an installer script, it will add your icon to the Dock for the root user. If you sign in as the root user, you will see the icon. This is because the postinstall script is running as root, and not as a regular user. emmett most likely added it to root's dock, check out /var/root/Library/Preferences. If you want to add it to the user's dock, first consider the fact that there might not even be a user installing the package - it could be installed while creating an unbooted system volume with System Image Utility, or deployed to a remote machine sitting at the login window. There may also be several users logged in at the same time. Should the icon be added to every logged in user's dock, or just if a user runs the installer interactively? Should it also handle users that log in to a machine where the application is already installed? You can use the following shell variables to build the logic you need: $3 Current install volume, "/" if it's installing on the current system $USER Typically (but not always) set when a user double clicks on the installer.
