Tell why it failed

My installer depends heavily on a postinstall script to do most of the work. The "install" part of the package just copies some data in, but then in postinstall I turn on Postgres, create the user/db, configure a bunch of files, etc…. There are many ways it can fail though, and right now I just do an "exit 1" and then the installer says the installation failed. How do I provide the user with a message as to exactly *why* it failed? For example, I'd like to be able to say, "Unable to connect to Postgres" so that they know to go check their configuration, for example. _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list. To expand on my previous response to include the linked article… the "FoundPackage" variable in those scripts is only going to examine the receipts on the ***BOOT VOLUME*** not the destination volume. So, again, what you consider to be an upgrade, might not be to the system, or vice versa. Regardless of if you consider it an upgrade, Installer does consider it an upgrade. As best I can tell it only reads receipts on the boot volume, regardless of what you specify as the destination volume. Thus conditions like allow relocation only work on the boot volume, regardless of where you are actually installing the software. Additionally, requirements, both for component packages as well as distribution (aka "flat meta" packages), can also be set to reference boot volume or destination volume. AFAIK, be it NetInstall, Deploy Studio or Casper, as long as they use installer (8) (and don't change the identifier of the package) to install the package, it's the same: the installation process is performed on the target machine and the pkgutil data base sits on the target machine. Now, for packages installed on a non startup location, it's a question I asked myself but haven't tested… yet. Some mysterious points would be: - is an installation on the non startup volume filed in the startup installation db or on the target volume itself? In 99.999999% of cases, I install on the startup volume. follow-up questions: if an installation was made on the startup volume and then I decide to install the product on another volume, will it be listed by pkgutils and so seen as an upgrade? - when I install a product on a non startup volume and it was already installed on the startup volume, do I consider this to be an upgrade? _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list. Great info, but don't those sample tests & scripts only work if you are installing on the boot drive? Or will they still work as part of a NetInstall, Deploy Studio, Casper or even just a local install to another OS on a separate partition/drive on the same machine? If you just want to restrict the installation to the startup volume, you can go without the "<domains enable_localSystem="true"/>" line and just use: <options rootVolumeOnly="true" customize="never" allow-external-scripts="no"/> I do not guarantee this will fix the issue.
