It is correct to say that your post or preflight scripts will not do as good of a job downloading as the packagemakers built in http. For one, packages don't have any clue what your doing in the scripts. You can also include the payload outside the installer, on some other media or a specified path (automounts come to mind). I experimented with http payloads and found that it wasn't helpful for my situation. They could be, however, an easy way to keep your payload up to date without having to redistribute the installer package.
