site_archiver@lists.apple.com Delivered-To: installer-dev@lists.apple.com Thread-index: AcYErh1bXAnp2HChEdqoYQANk3Ch3A== Thread-topic: packagemaker doesn't work User-agent: Microsoft-Entourage/11.2.1.051004 There are some packages that the GUI just choked on that I needed to use the command line to do. My work flow is like this... 1. Install Developer tools 2. Install Iceberg 3. Run LogGen (no need to install I hide it in my image) 4. Install and modify software 5. Run LogGen again 6. Make note of home directory items LogGen seems to miss 7. Try IceBerg first, if that fails 8. Try PackageMaker GUI, if that fails 9. Try PackageMaker Command line, if that fails 10. I don't need it bad enough for the trouble I use packages a lot for re-packaging commercial software with our custom settings for our imaging purposes. IceBerg goes a long way to make that process simpler. There NEEDS to be an all-in-one solution to scanning a system, making changes, and creating a package based on the change list (with the ability to look at the files and approve/disapprove individual files). This process is super easy with utilities like Altiris on the Windows side. If this is a PackageMaker thing...great, an ARD thing, awesome...whatever form it takes. Even if the above process could create a standard format XML list that can then be fed into a program like IceBerg or Package Maker to create the package. An Uninstaller would be nice too 8-)...but I know that is beyond the Package Maker GUI discussion. As an non-developer, but an IT professional that needs to support a few thousand machines, it needs to be easier to do these types of tasks that really have no solution on OSX beyond the management of several separate tools. I got the Netboot, image process down pat..it is just creating these packages for deployment is a royal pain in the rump. While I am at it, it would be nice to see something like Radmind adopted by Apple, and work in conjunction with Package Maker and OSX Server. As Apple builds more open source solutions into Server (like the Weblog feature that took me all of 15 minutes to set-up and integrate into our Active Directory) more IT service type utilites, especially in the realm of imaging and deployment, would be greatly appreciated. These types of things will go a long way to helping IT people to use the platform. -Mike On 12/19/05 8:53 AM, "Christopher Ryan" <ryanc@apple.com> wrote:
Can you describe a little more two things:
1) Why the Package Maker GUI is too limited to use (we can't make it better without good feedback).
2) What arguments you are sending to the CLI. One of the most common "new" restrictions is that you need to have a package identifier (CFBundleIdentifier), it is possible that you don't, although the error should be stated more clearly.

Since I can't get things done correctly because of the limitations of the GUI version, I tried using the CLI tool instead. But it doesn't work. All I get, with any invocation, is:
"The package could not be created because of the following errors:"
with absolutely nothing between the above error and the terminal prompt.
What gives? How am I supposed to know what to fix if it doesn't tell me what it thinks is wrong?? (and I *know* there's nothing wrong after reading the docs numerous times)
