Hi, I'm currently working on packaging for a command line application of mine (http://www.atagar.com/arm). It's a python script so installing via a tarball hasn't been a problem for mac users so far, but I'm trying to make things easier. I just started distributing debs/rpms for Linux distributions, and I'm not sure of the proper counterpart for Macs. There seems to be two options:
dmg - Most common format for macs. Is this just for GUI applications or is it done for terminal applications as well? Installing to the dashboard really wouldn't make much sense for this...
macport (http://www.macports.org/) - Kinda looks like a BSD style distribution method, being fetched and installed from their repository rather than via packages. This looks like the better solution from a technical sense (it would make updating easy) but I'm not sure how prevalent its usage is in the mac community (ie, would mac users recognize it?).
My target audience is tor relay operators so they tend to be pretty advanced users. Any thoughts on the preferred method of distributing terminal applications? Thanks! -Damian
