I'm in need of some guidance to re-write a wrong. The installation of Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.1.3.mpkg causes the ownership of the Applications folder to change from root:admin to what appears to be user:staff. If you view the permissions as root, they show up as _unknown:_unknown. The previous version of Open XML Converter 1.1.0 also causes this problem. The version prior to that was 1.0.2 and did not cause the issue. Running repair permissions after installing 1.1.0 reset the ownership to root:admin. Installing 1.1.3 six months later once again set ownership to _unknown:_unknown, but running repair permissions had no effect. Manually setting ownership to root:admin and then running repair permissions reported that: Two questions. Where does the system read the ownership of the Applications folder The Repair permissions feature is relying on receipts for the Mac OS X installation packages, usually. and was it really necessary for the package to change those permissions? OK maybe three. Is there any other program that does this? It's not a program issue. The owner and group are incorrect in 3 of the packages of their Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.1.3.mpkg distribution. One has to admit it's creative to use 99:99. Usually, it's 502:502 (like it was in the first versions of Office 2008 for Mac - http:// support.microsoft.com/kb/948488). The best thing to do is to report this to Microsoft and sacrifice a chicken(*). (*) Last time I reported issues in the Office 2008 packages, the report was ignored. So maybe if you sacrifice a chicken, things may work better for you. This email sent to site_archiver@lists.apple.com
