Some time ago I asked how to create packages that are able to update previously installed files. Now, I am returning to the above subject, because none of the answers helped me to resolve my problem. The task is very simple. Suppose we have a file, say x, installed using the installer package created by PackageMaker. During the installation of x, user had freedom to choose the location for x. He also had to authenticate himself as administrator in order to proceed with the installation. Suppose that a new version of x is available. What I need is to create the installer package that will replace the old version of x with the new one. This updater should only ask the user to authenticate as administrator and should not ask for the destination (which should be exactly the same as the location of the old version of x). My application checks if its new version is available on the server. If it finds the one, it downloads and then calls the updater and quits. This email sent to site_archiver@lists.apple.com
