It isn't about what Package Maker is doing, it is more about what is supported in Mac OS X's Package technology. At this time it is "gzip" is the only understood compression type. Although this could certainly change in the future, it would be unlikely to be compatible with previous release of OS X. Either way, we are always looking at ways of improving the Installation technology and are aware that there are better ways to compress package content. The famous Windows *free* installer maker InnoSetup compress our files 2 times better! If I try compress our files using StuffIt then I also get about 4.5-4.6 MB. So I wonder, if InnoSetup - free product - is able use some (LZA it seems) algorithm to get so good compression, why Apple not use it also ?
