No amount of whining is going to change the fact that the best way to force a user to look at an icon is by shoving it in the Dock. If this were not the case then Apple would cease such practices entirely. They're his users and if he wants to risk annoying them with poor application citizenship, that's entirely his business, and any resultant complaints from those who simply cannot spare the second and a half it takes to undo the unthinkable damage to their nerdly domains are entirely his problem.
