DMG are a far superior method of software distribution and I have not seen more software distributors recently using the zip archive format in preference of DMG as you have stated.
(And, by the way: DMG views looks rather ugly when you have hidden files switched visible.) This is a non-issue. I would be curious to know the need for showing hidden files.
