Do I have to localize the install location in my installer somehow, and if so, how is this done? As far as I can tell from my German installation, /Applications is always named like that. The i18n layer seems to be placed above that, so you can always address the folder as /Applications (and go there via shell), although Finder will call it "Anwendungen" (or something else, I am currently on my Windows machine).
