Installed downloaded software updates via commandline

I like to know what would be the correct method to install software updates that I've downloaded via the commandline "installer -d" option on Leopard. I see that they have .dist files but unfortunately the command line version of "installer" can not deal with those files even so "Installer" accepts them but then errors out (The install failed (The Installer could not install the software because there was no software found to install.)) Do I have to manually look into the .dist file and figure things out on my own? Is there any documentation on the content of a .dist file? I've not found anything This email sent to site_archiver@lists.apple.com
