One trick that I've found works is to look for the Package Receipt for the package you are trying to upgrade. The problem there is that the original app was a drag install, so no package receipt exists! Apple encourages drag installs where possible, and I do prefer them myself, but then it becomes very difficult to update your app afterwards. In my case, the update includes the app plus lots of supporting data files that are not in the app bundle. Therefore, I can't rely on the user to simply drag install all the update parts.
