One of the advantages of flat packages is they can be transported as-is - there's no need to wrap them in a disk image. I used to use DMGConverter to drag and drop a .mpkg installer and it would make a DMG for me. Now that that new packages are not folders, drag and drop onto DMGConverter, or make a DMG from a folder in Disk Utility don't work.
