Background for Disk Images are broken, kaput, par terre in Snow
Leopard. As soon as you set a background picture on a disk image in
Snow Leopard, the nightmare begins. The background picture will not
show up on Mac OS X 10.5 most of the time. Sometimes even setting it
later on 10.5 will change nothing.
And if you set your background picture on 10.5 or earlier, you will
need to take into account a different margin at the bottom of the
disk image.
Disk Images are nice but they suffer from a lot of issues when it
comes to background pictures, icon alignment and icon view mode. On
some occasions, when working on disk images, stay far away from the
walls or you could hurt yourself.
They are broken, but DMG Canvas gets pretty close to fixing it at least for backward compatibility to 10.5. There's a preference to enable Leopard compatibility, and it does work! You're right about the margin at the bottom. I am lucky, because the shape of my background image doesn't look too bad with some extra whitespace at the bottom. So I have used the "Fit to image" button on DMG Canvas, and then I add about 40 pixels to the height of the canvas. The entire image shows up on both platforms, but one has more whitespace at the bottom than the other. I suggest you make your artwork such that it will look OK whether the bottom of it lines up prefectly or not. If I had the Adium background picture with the grass, I would make sure to have extra grass at the bottom to compensate for the difference.
