The best place to start is the books by W. Richard Stevens, "Unix Network Programming".
Best overview/introduction. I would also recommend "More Effective TCP/IP" as it concentrates on some important common issues.
Ugh. Before anybody jumps in: I certainly did NOT mean to imply that Stevens is only introductory, it of course is so deep and detailed that it can be close to overwhelming to take it all in--it's well written, but the subject matter is deep and complex.
