I have been asking for an updated API for well over a year now. I filed
a series of bug reports
about the existing AE 3.1 implementation and requested that a newer AE
plug-in specification
be adopted.
Apple has not responded to my requests other than to tell me that they
do not plan to work on
the AE plug-in API in FCP any more and that there is no alternative
interface. I have been told to
write my plug-in for Motion instead....even though I have pointed out
that my plug-in is for video
editors and not motion graphics artists.
There has been some talk that the FCP team will be implementing the new
FXPlug system that was
added to Motion recently. However this system does not support video
transitions yet and the FCP
team has not announced that they are actually going to begin work on
FXPlug.

Is there ANY way--perhaps via another plug-in API, or some set of hooks that

I guess the question becomes, what do you want this dialog to do? You
say you're not manipulating audio or video data. Are you exporting a
file of some sort? If you're allowing the user to change some
settings, what settings are they changing, and for what application
or plugin, or whatever? What exactly are you trying to do?
>From what you've described so far, it sounds like you just want a
random dialog to be displayed in Final Cut Pro to present some data
to the user. But it sounds like your dialog isn't really related to
Final Cut Pro in any way. What is this dialog for? What sort of data
are you showing to the user or trying to get from them? It's really
hard to give you a specific answer when you wont give us any more
information than that.
