I hadn't read the docs closely enough to see the extra project parameter to be included in the AppleEvent, and was instead including it in the XML (where it was being ignored). Turns out either you have given the Apple Event a project as an argument (in which case the targetprojectname is ignored because you already gave one) or you have no project name, in which case the frontmost project is used (and targetprojectname is ignored again because a project was already chosen). You can file a bug against this if you like. Arguably, the no project case should respect the importoptions and only use the frontmost project if createnewproject is false and targetprojectname is not set. I'm working on a plugin that imports a sequence by sending XML to FCP. It also queries FCP for the list of open projects so it knows the project choices. I launched FCP with no projects, then created two new projects and saved them as "Test Project #1" and "Stevec project", respectively. I find that no matter which project I specify, or if I set createnewproject=TRUE to create a new project, the sequence always ends up being added to "Stevec project". A few developers responded with the expected answers (camera info, light info, layer matrices), etc. Can someone on the Apple team tell us where we stand on this? I know that we can get (some/most) camera info and a layer's matrix, but we're interested in a few more things. A few questions: - Can we get any 3D light info? We'd like to be able to mimic the lights in our 3D scenes (so we can match the Motion scene's lighting). - Can we get the transform of a particular (named?) layer - or can we only get our own info? We'd like to allow a 3D object in our scene to track a 3D object in Motion. I know there are always changes in the works, so maybe someone can comment on the above. It is extremely convenient (for some applications) to be able to record sound on a portable audio recorder that is not tethered to a camera. There can be all sorts of reasons for mixing cameras too. Sure it's not ideal, but if it can be easily fixed with software in post, why not? If I understand the situation correctly I don't need to worry about matching Bezier handles because the speed is constant for the whole clip. One remaining limitation of using the timecode entry for this purpose is that speed changes are limited to the granularity of a video frame. Using subframeoffset can reduce that a bit, but there can still be enough residual error that there is noticeable phase distortion when mixing the sound sources. Being able to specify a fine-grained percentage would be better, but in the absence of that, modifying the audio outside FCP (via QT wrapper, perhaps?) is another option. Time remap seems like a good mechanism to adjust things back into sync. But the speed value only seems to be able to retain numbers up to a precision of two decimal places. For example, enter 100.12345 in the user interface and 100.133 is what gets stored in the XML, which is not even rounded properly. The residual error over the length of an hour can be hundreds of milliseconds, which is not acceptable for many synchronization purposes. I can't figure out if this is an artifact of the user interface or some fundamental limitation. Is there a sneaky way to specify a remap speed with greater precision? Just curious - what happens if you modify the XML by hand and put in the extra precision digits? Summary: FCP does respect the high-precision parameters in the XML, and they are preserved when the project is saved. Some details: When you do Modify > Speed on an audio clip, it affects a couple of things in the XML. The speed <value> element gets the value that the user entered (with some mangling of precision). And the keyframe <when> element gets updated to reflect the new number of frames. Experiments indicate that keyframe <when> takes precedence over speed <value>. The Modify > Speed dialog lets you adjust the Duration field to the precision of a frame, but the Speed field mangles the entered value. This seems like a bug to me and I will report it. For my needs, as long as my users don't mess with the Modify > Speed dialog everything should be OK. Is that correct? XML is in the workflow. I am writing a plugin that helps with synchronization. It retrieves the project XML, analyzes the clips to determine the drift and writes back XML with a time remap speed parameter to compensate. My concerns are that (1) FCP may not respect the full precision of the speed parameter in the XML, (2) even if it does, it may not persist when the project is saved, and (3) if the user looks at the speed in the UI, its value will be corrupted. I'm pretty sure about #2 and #3, but I'm doing an experiment to assess #1 right now and will let you know shortly.
