So far as I am aware these issues were fixed in FCP 7. In some cases the offending characters are control characters. If you are familiar with the command line, the easiest way to find this is with an old-fashioned editor like 'vi'. (Most GUI editors tend to be entirely too helpful and do not display such characters at all.) An alternative is to use another command line tool 'xmllint' and see if it complains about anything. I've got a customer with a strange situation. He exports an XML file of his sequence, but the XML won't reimport back into FCP: you get the critical error and general error dialogs. Could this be caused by a corrupt sequence or a problematic clip in the sequence? Greg. Eryk, you are exactly right. The problem was FCP was exporting some bad characters in the lognote field that weren't escaped. Text Edit didn't show the characters, but TextMate did. For fellow XMLers, here's a tip I learned last week. If you open an XML file in Firefox or Camino, it will tell you if it's valid and show you exactly where the problem is. We see this from time to time when customers have clips originated from DVDxDV, it write some bogus invisible characters into the Reel column and these characters make for malformed XML. I didn't have the time to trouble shoot the issue so I canned the OS and fell back to a cloned virgin OS on another volume. Only apps on my virgin OS were CS4 and FCP version 7.0. Had no idea what caused the deadly crashes. Darrin when I have the time I will boot from the corrupted volume and send you a log We just replaced our Video Lab this summer with brand new Mac Pros (16 computer lab) that are running Leopard 10.5. While making this change we also upgraded to brand new Xserves and upgrade out XSan to 2.x instead of 1.x just to give you a background. Ever since the students showed up and the lab has been in use we have been having an exorbitant amount of Final Cut Studio crashes across the board. The crashes are very random based on what the user is doing and the length which they have been using the program (sometimes on opening the program...sometimes after 30 minutes of use). We are not using roaming profiles. The lab is connected to our Active Directory system so once a user authenticates to our system to login the actual home folders are stored locally and then they work off the SAN. I have tried having users remove their preferences to rest them. I have run disk/permission repairs on the systems, and they are fully up-to-date as far as software updates are concerned. The only thing I haven't tried is completely re-installing a system from the ground up but I'm not real keen on taking the time to do that...can anyone offer advice on anything else I could try? As I'm typing this I just thought of something that I haven't tried and that would be to run a system independent of AD for testing. "Do your work with enthusiasm.
