This sounds weird, but it looks like FCP 6 isn't refreshing the interface enough when the sequence is using one of the HDV codecs, leading to a beachball cursor. I've filed bug #5627030. To produce this apply the Slow_SolidColor example from the FxPlug SDK to a sequence using, say, HDV1080i60. Increase the delay parameter to 3 or more seconds and you should the beachball cursor (if not change the parameter a couple times). Using PhotoJPEG, we only see the animated cursor.
