If you use a Layer Group it crashes. If I use a single source layer ( with or without filters ) it works fine. I have placed an example Generator and source at <www.cidertank.com/TESTDRIVE.zip> . Nothing comes to mind. Do you think you could file a bug at bugreporter.apple.com, with a reproducible case with a plug-in (or even better, a barebones plug-in Xcode project) that demonstrates the problem?
