Is this because I had FCP 7 installed? I'm on 10.6.8, 2.8 ghz Core 2 Duo, 2009 MacBook Pro.

Sounds very bizarre. Have you checked things like "other C flags" (or "other C++ flags")? If you post the command line that Xcode generates, that would make it easier to see what the problem might be.
