It is extremely convenient (for some applications) to be able to record sound on a portable audio recorder that is not tethered to a camera. There can be all sorts of reasons for mixing cameras too. Sure it's not ideal, but if it can be easily fixed with software in post, why not? Bruce On Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 7:31 AM, Stonewall Ballard <sb.list@sb.org> wrote:
I keep wondering why I've never run into this problem, even with hour+ recordings from multiple unsynced prosumer Sony camcorders. You're mixing the sound from multiple sources! That requires very tight timing, under 50usec skew by the end of the recording. I'd be surprised if that's possible.
Obviously, you should record sound on only one recorder.

... One remaining limitation of using the timecode entry for this purpose is that speed changes are limited to the granularity of a video frame. Using subframeoffset can reduce that a bit, but there can still be enough residual error that there is noticeable phase distortion when mixing the sound sources. Being able to specify a fine-grained percentage would be better, but in the absence of that, modifying the audio outside FCP (via QT wrapper, perhaps?) is another option.
