But 255 value is in fact a non valid YUV value, and Final Cut is in the right to push that down to 254, if not lower. I'm not sure if there is a way to get it to bypass this, unless as you stated before, you are working in an RGB mode, which should be able to run the full gamut in all channels 0 - 255. In any case he shouldn't even notice the darkening of the image, if he is then something else is happening as well.
