The problem is that the "value" of the parameters mentioned in his point #2 and #3 are treated as indices into the table of targets from point #1. Deleting a parameter from the targets means that the indices of parameters with values> the deleted index have to be updated. I did a FCPX-compatible version of our PhotoCopy product, where each "preset" is a different look model derived from source images.
