You'd be surprised how many people know about this ( and use it on a daily basis ). Most commonly though, the function is used when applying filters to range selections, rather than trimming the length in the time bar. On topic, could I add my vote for an ability to set a generator's duration automagically from within the generator code. That would be extremely useful.
