Some cryptic partial code here relating to walking the DIF structure.... http://www.skydiver.de/stef/code_1.pdf You will need the appropriate SMPTE specs to make head or tail of this SMPTE 314m is a good place to start, but curiously it does not mention datecode at all, but it does describe the VAUX section.
