A whole day goes by and nobody posts about the discontinuation of the Xserve? The other listserves are lit up with traffic about it, and I'm happy that you all have more important things to do :-)
http://www.apple.com/xserve/resources.html
In all seriousness, this was very surprising news for me to wake up to today. Here is Apple's official response regarding the Xserve.
---
"Apple remains committed to the development of server products, services and technologies. Apple continues to offer Mac OS X Server software, Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server, and starting today a new configuration of Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server. Today's announcement does not impact the future of Xsan or server software on Mac OS X."

There is also an Xserve transition guide, posted here: http://images.apple.com/xserve/pdf/L422277A_Xserve_Guide.pdf
I'm sure questions along these lines have crossed your mind at some point today:
- What about a hardware option with LOM (Lights-out Management) and dual power supplies?
- Will there continue to be an Apple-specific Promise RAID chassis?
- Are there plans to allow Mac OS X Server to live on non-Apple hardware, either natively or virtualized?
- Was Apple selling more Mac Pros and Mac Minis for servers in the first place?
- Will there be a service parts kit for the Mac Pro?
- Will there be support for side-oriented mounting of the Mac Pro?
- Are there third party rack mounting options for the Mac Pro? Mac Mini?
- Will Apple be 'outsourcing' to a 3rd party server solution - ie Promise strategy?
- Will we see a preview of server services in 10.7?
My answer to all of these questions, embarrassing as it is, is "I don't know." We are still gathering facts, and will have more messaging and direction soon. As soon as I have it, I will share it on this list with all of you. Please feel free to send me any feedback that you have. If you do so, also submit your feedback to apple.com/feedback, as that has significant impact as well.
Thanks, and have a great weekend.
Corey
