Hello Rockies list,
Thank you to all of the schools that provided feedback to Apple on a new feature request! Steve Jobs even mentioned during the keynote that "teachers want to hook up iPads up to their flat-panel TVs in the classroom so everybody can see." I'd like to add to that VGA projectors ;-)
With the iPad 2, there is a new feature that allows HDMI / VGA full video mirroring to an external display. No more need for a document camera to display what's on the screen in the classroom. This, obviously, is a really big deal. There has been a lot of questions about this feature and these are the specifics.
Video mirroring is a hardware dependent feature provided only by the iPad 2 - the new graphics and processing capabilities are what provide this feature - not the cable(s) or iOS.
Video mirroring on the iPad 2 is supported via either the new Digital AV adapter (HDMI) or via the current Apple VGA adapter - either of these will support (because of the new iPad 2 hardware) full display mirroring - including interface navigation and all apps.
The 1st generation iPad is only able to provide video out via the VGA cable and is App-based - it cannot do video mirroring. It is only able to display out, what a given App was designed to show, not the entire user interface. For example, Keynote was able to show presentations via video out, but iCal could not. Nor could you see the entire home screen or interface navigation.
The original iPad can take advantage of the new Digital AV adapter to continue to provide this app based video out over HDMI now, in addition to the Apple VGA adapter. Again, neither of these cables will allow video mirroring on the original iPad. I hope this clarifies what's possible with mirroring, and please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Corey
