Dan,
Here in college of Engineering we have a very heterogeneous environment with Windows, UNIX/Linux, and Macs. We are also very UNIX centric in terms of file, web, and email services. We leverage Samba to share out our UNIX file systems. This has worked out very well for us for close to 20 years now. Macs have no problems accessing our file services via CIFS protocol. And with our SSL gateway our fac/staff and students can also access our services from anywhere in the world. This includes Android and iOS devices as there are apps that allow them to connect to our SSL gateway. We have even recently dropped NFS support, as now all clients have the ability to mount shares with CIFS including Linux. NFS has always been a huge security hole in any network environment.
We also cannot afford the expensive cluster file systems, so we buy what we can. Usualy hardened disk arrays with dual controllers, power supplies and RAID5 or 6 coverage. Third party cloud storage services really hasn't been issue here at CSU as we already have polices in place that restricts the use of these services with any college related sensitive materials.
