All,
Since it's approximately the 1 year mark for many of you that deployed a mobile device management solution last spring, I wanted to remind you that those certificates might be near expiration. There are two kinds of certificates when dealing with MDM; Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
An APNS certificate is used by all MDM solutions to enable "triggering" of events, such as updating a profile, wiping a device, locking a device, or clearing a passcode on a device). An APNS certificate is required to enable Device Management in Profile Manager and for all MDM solutions. An APNS certificate can only come directly from Apple and it is free.
APNS certificates last for one year and must be renewed annually. While an MDM server has an expired APNS certificate the server cannot contact clients (to use any MDM features such as push profiles, collect reporting data, wipe or lock a device) and clients cannot be enrolled. Renewing an APNS certificate is free and does not require clients to be re-enrolled. Each MDM vendor should have documentation on the renewal process.
For SSL certificates, that renewal process is done by the CA (certificate authority) that provides your SSL certificate.
If you have questions, feel free to ask your Apple SE!
