Just ignore me. :)
Eventually worked out how to change my meta key to be option instead of
command:
bonfire@grumble:~$ cat .Xmodmap
keycode 66 = Meta_L
keycode 69 = Alt_R
add mod1 = Meta_L
add mod2 = Meta_L
add mod3 = Meta_L
add mod4 = Meta_L
and untick "Follow system keyboard layout" in Input Preferences.
Probably breaks alt/meta for xemac - which I don't use so I don't care.
