I suspect that no one else has as good of an eye for fonts as you do.
:-) Also you've probably exceeded the expertise of this list.
Between X11 beta 3 and X11 1.0 the X libraries were updated from what
XFree86 distributed with 4.2.1 to 4.3.0. These two versions of
XFree86 included different versions of Freetype and 4.4 has yet a
newer version. I've tried Monaco-10 on XFree86 4.4 RC 1 and the "m"
looks good, but the "Ma" still runs together a bit. The default for
Aqua apps is not to anti-alias 10 point fonts at all, so you are
pushing the envelop a bit.
If you are interested, probably the best place to raise this kind of
issue is on the Freetype mailing lists (See <http://freetype.org/>
for info.) or the XFree86 developers list email@hidden. These
lists will not recognize Apple's X11, but they will know about
differences between versions of XFree86.

Hi!
I just upgraded to Panther. When working under X11 I'm usually a big
fan of Xft fonts---they make the appearance of my X windows much more
bearable next to all the nice OS X windows.
Strangely, the Xft fonts seem to look worse now compared to the font
renderings I got with X11 beta 3. It looks like as if the distance of
some letters/strokes is somehow distored now.
Have a look at the following screenshots I just took:

consider the "Ma" combination, or the small "m".
With X11 beta 3, it all more looked like the rendering as you see it
with e.g. the "Font Book" application:

Any explanations for this? Do I have to configure Xft manually in some
ways?
This is on a PowerBook G4 (15") btw. And I don't have any font
configuartion file in place (besides the automatically installed
default stuff).
