There's isn't a X11 project template. You can use the C++ Tool project
as a start. The default target just includes Headers and Sources.
You'll need to add a new build phase (Project > New Build Phase) and
choose Frameworks & Libraries. To add the X11 libraries, right-click on
the group and choose Add Frameworks. You'll have to press Command-shift
G to get the Go to dialog, and then go to /usr/X11R6/lib and add the
required libraries. It's a little clunky, but it works.
XCode adds the versioned dylibs (eg. libX11.1.2.dylib.) Is there any
way to add libX11.dylib to a project, for example? It's a link to the
libX11.1.2.dylib, but portability is better using the symbolic link.
Otherwise, projects must be updated to match any new versions of
libraries.
