I am trying to display info from a Unix based machine on my
Macintosh running OS 10.2.
This is what I do:
1) I open an x11 terminal window on my Mac.
By x11 terminal window you mean an xterm?
2) I then type: xhost +machine.Iwanttolookat.edu
3) I open another x11 terminal window on my Mac.
Strictly speaking, not necessary to open another. You could use ssh
in the first one. But it should work either way.
4) I then type: ssh -l myname machine.Iwanttolookat.edu
5) Once I am logged on, I type setenv DISPLAY 128.XXX.XX.XX:0.0
Are you absolutely sure this is the IP address of your Mac?
However this doesn't seem to work.
If, for example, I type: xterm &
I get an error stating that
% Error: Can't open display: 128.XXX.XX.XX 1:0.0
Is there something obvious I am missing?
Are you running a firewall on your Mac? Either ipfw, that comes with
OS X, or one you purchased, say from Norton? Do you have a local
(personal) router with a built in NAT firewall that is enabled?
Thanks,
Charles
As someone else mentioned, using ssh -X, and *not* setting DISPLAY,
is a more secure way. However, I don't see any errors in what you
did; I think it should have worked.
