Remember that dpkg is actually a program from Debian GNU/Linux, so the
error message is likely to be assuming Linux paths (update-rc.d is in
/usr/sbin on Debian Linux systems).
Fink is installed in /sw, and a very quick search shows that update-rc.d
is in /sw/sbin
All the approporiate paths will be added to your environment
automatically if you place:
source /sw/bin/init.csh
in your .cshrc.
If you're using bash as your shell, the equivalent command to place in
your .bashrc is:
. /sw/bin/init.sh
You can then run all of these fink admin tools with commands such as:
sudo apt-get install xemacs
and supply your password. sudo inherits your normal user's environment,
so you don't have to mess with root's configuration (which is likely to
land you in hot water if you get it wrong, since all sorts of things can
start to break)
