Is it possible to display remote apps without using ssh? I'm on a VPN

Yes.
The problem is when I rsh to remote and do "xclock -display
x.x.x.x:0.0". I've tried doing "xhost +" on my local box as well as
doing the 'xauth merge' dance on the remote box, but nothing seems to
work. I've also tried unchecking the "authenenticate connections" box
in the X11.app preferences. I've also done "defaults write
com.apple.x11 no_auth true" and "defaults write com.apple.x11
nolisten_tcp false", and still no joy. In all cases I get "Error:
Can't open display: x.x.x.x:0.0 after a long wait.
Can remote ping x.x.x.x? Is something blocking port 6000 between the
two?
If you're tempted to say "just use ssh -X; it's better", that's not
the answer I'm looking for. While that may be true, I have reasons why
I want to be able to do this with rsh. Maybe not good reasons, but
reasons nontheless.
But... but...
Cheers,
Nick
