The reason that doesn't work is because of X authority cookies not being
correct. That was always a pain to get right with XDM sessions. One of
the reasons I'm pleading with you to log into their system with ssh is
that it handles the setting of DISPLAY and the transfer of X authority
cookies for you completely transparently. For example, here's what
happens from a terminal on my computer when I log into another machine
using ssh:
Last login: Thu May 22 15:59:46 on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
16:01:36 tim@phobos:~$ echo $DISPLAY
:0.0
16:01:39 tim@phobos:~$ ssh -X -l tjrc foo2
Last login: Thu May 22 16:00:28 BST 2003 from
phobos.our.internal.network
Compaq Tru64 UNIX V5.1A (Rev. 1885); Tue Feb 12 13:52:22 GMT 2002
You have new mail.
16:01:45 tjrc@foo2d:~$ echo $DISPLAY
foo2d:24.0
16:02:05 tjrc@foo2d:~$ xeyes &
[1] 2266353
No having to set DISPLAY by hand, no messing with xauthority, secure
encrypted connections. No problems.
