Hi,
We would like to set up X11 so that it automatically connects to an
X11
client using XDM, we always connect to the same client and do not use
X11 for anything else. In the past, we have used Tenon's X-Ten (I have
also tried their X-Tools) and we had no problem configuring it to
connect via remote XDM, we just had to enter the server address and
everything else was taken care of.
Why do you need to use xdm? Remote sessions of that sort have a number
of potential issues:
1) The X traffic is unencrypted, so there is a potential security
issue. For example - you type a password into an xterm, and it goes
across the network in clear text.
2) Your window manager and all of your X clients are running remotely,
which uses network bandwidth.
I am only using XDM because that is what XTen and XTools offer and that
connection has always worked. I can log into the client using X11, but
I only get a terminal window. Even after making sure $DISPLAY is set, I
cannot get simple things like xeyes to show. And despite repeated
attempts, there is absolutely no help from the IT department, even
though they are running the client and charging us for using it. Do you
have any more suggestions?
Carsten
If you use SSH, you solve both of these problems instantly; your X
connections are tunnelled through SSH and so are encrypted and secure,
and your window manager is running locally, which gets you nice fast
interactive performance.
How can I configure X11 to do the same thing? I have tried SSH to no
avail and also searched the web, but I can't seem to make sense of the
information that's out there - I am pretty new to UNIX and X11. Can
anybody advise me how to set up our X11 for remote XDM?
You can't. Apple's X server does not support XDMCP. You really should
investigate getting the X11 method working. I switched to it about
five
years ago, and have never regretted it.
I believe XDarwin does support XDMCP sessions, but I really don't
recommend you manage your sessions that way. XDMCP is a relic from the
Internet's older and more trustworthy days.
