1. Ive read that the Aqua desktop and the KDE desktop can coexist.
My desktop is taken over by KDE, wallpaper and all.
My dock still works, and I see all of my Aqua desktop icons, but those do
nothing. Almost like theyre just graphics on my desktop.
KDE makes its own copies of them, but instead of being shortcuts anymore,
theyre just empty docs.
Only way I can access any of my Aqua OS X stuff is either by launching from
the dock, or clicking on the Finder in the dock and using CMD+N to open a
new window. So is there a way to get the two to work hand in hand? Perhaps,
kill the KDE desktop, just keep the Taskbar?
"fink info kdebase3" tells you how to turn that off.
2. Like someone else recently mentioned, the Taskbar does not resize icons
either. I have it on the left side of the screen (obviously, I still need
the OS X dock), and no settings I make to it actually take effect.
This only seems to happen in Apple's X11 (beta3 specifically... older
versions did not do this). It works properly in XFree86 4.3.0.
3. Windows and such, which was also mentioned, appear underneath things. I
was happy to finally be able to use the systray icon for Gaim last night,
but whenever I clicked on it to get the menu, it appears underneath the
Taskbar and I cant see what Im actually selecting. Same with all the apps.
I think this may be an Apple X11 thing too, Apple's X11 isn't (yet) very
good at understanding some of the window management hints KDE uses,
although it's gotten better with each release.
While I'm here, is there any word on whether Apple X11 will be updated
to 4.3.0 before an official release? As a member of the Fink team who
has to manage these types of things, it would be very good to attempt to
plan for it if not, since there are major issues in going back and forth
between X11 versions (because of Xft libraries and such).
I know that it has been said eventually things will by sync'd, but we've
already started seeing Apple X11 bundled with other (non-Fink) apps, and
as time goes on that is going to make managing a distro that supports
both the old 4.2 libraries and the new 4.3 ones.
