XDMCP is fine; its traffic simply needs to be secured. This is an ideal
application for IPSec, which is supported in Darwin (see racoon(8),
setkey(8), etc.) as well as many other modern Unices, including OpenBSD by
default and various flavors of Linux with FreeS/WAN. I do this all the
time.
