Hi,
Is there any advantage to using fink to download binaries vs source
code to get a package?
Very new newbie.

You can compile from source using fink (as long as you have Apple's
Developer Tools, available without charge by download, although
registration is required) or use fink binaries. For packages that have
binaries, I prefer using the binaries because they are quicker and
there is no possibility of a compilation problem.
I usually first look for packages designed for OS X (installed like any
other OS X app). For example, fink doesn't have OpenOffice, so I use a
package for that. I also use OS X specific packages for Tex (TexShop
and i-package, WordNet, Apple's X11 beta, MySQL 4, and several others.
I have gone back and forth on using fink versus compiling everything
from source outside of fink. The latter is much more difficult and
doesn't work for me for a fairly large number of programs (the fink
people do a lot of work on some of these packages). For example, I use
fink for everything KDE and most Gnome things (GIMP, AbiWord, Gnumeric).
In general, where I can get a program built on my system with only a
little effort, I will do that and not use fink. Otherwise, I use fink.
Here is a list (not fully complete) of programs I have successfully
