Not sure about this one, but I'll bet they're the same problem.
The problem you are having is due to a mix of executables from
different installs of Mac OS X. What version are you running? What is
the result of 'type less' (or 'which less' if you are using csh/tcsh
instead of sh/bash)? What version of X11 did you install?
