But since they are "just X clients", they can also run on the remote
machine. This is the only interpretation of Ron's question that made
sense to me. He wants to run the window manager not on the PC, but on
the Mac. Not knowing anything about eXceed and whether it allows to use
foreign window managers, I would still assume that quartz-wm is not made
for this kind of thing. It only runs when you are logged in at the
console. OTOH, window managers like fvwm or metacity or blackbox or any
of the others I pointed to, should work in such situations.
